Conservatives and radicals in political, philosophical and religious thought from 1825 to 1905: the Tsar, Orthodox Church, opposition parties and groups, conservatives, liberals, socialists and revolutionaries.
Arts and culture, leisure and lifestyle, in town and country: arts on the estates, ‘people’s palaces’ and theatres in the towns, the perceived social role of artists and writers, new versus old forms and content.
Women, youth and education: position and role of women, opportunities for youth, nature of education in schools and universities.
Tsarist government: central – autocracy, later leading to the Duma; local – councils, the zemstvos.
Classes in town and country: bourgeoisie – merchants, industrialists, financiers; proletariat – workers, peasants, soldiers; gentry – landowners and government officials; intelligentsia and professionals – lawyers, doctors, engineers, writers, civil servants, teachers, etc.
